HOW TO FIT A HELMET

"Having a poorly fitted helmet is like wearing a loose seat belt in a car. It won't provide much protection when you need it"

A correctly fitted helmet will offer the best protection. It is mandatory in Australia to wear a helmet when riding a bike. Do not buy a helmet that is too big in the hope that your child will grow into it. Helmets which are too big will not offer the protection that it is designed to do.

What to look for in a Helmet.

  • The helmet meets Australian/New Zealand Standard AS/NZS 2063
  • Select the right size and have it correctly fitted (we can help you if you are unsure).

Depending on the design of the helmet, there maybe a Universal Fit Ring (UFR) on the back that can be adjusted to fit your head.

Universal Fit Ring (UFR) adjustment system

For Skate helmets or other designs, without a UFR, you need select the correct size by measuring the head circumference and rely on the inbuilt lining/sizing pads to make the correct fit. You may need to add extra padding for a snug fit or remove them as the head grows.

How to Fit a Helmet.

  • Make sure the helmet is level when you put it on. Adjust the UFR for a snug comfortable fit. A correctly fitted helmet should stay on your head in the correct position and not move when you tilt your head from side to side, without the strap.

  • The front of the helmet should sit low to protect your forehead, we recommend 2 fingers width above your child's eyebrow. When your child looks up, they should be able to see the front rim of the helmet .

  • The straps should form a 'Y' shape and meet below the earlobe. Make sure straps are not twisted.

  • Buckle the chin strap, making sure it is not too tight and no more than two fingers can fit between the strap and chin.

It is important the helmet is comfortable. Caps/hats should not be worn under helmets as it interferes with the fit and protection. Choose a helmet that provides a good fit, is not too heavy, and has good ventilation.

A helmet is designed to protect a person's head for one impact only. If the helmet has been involved in a crash or is dropped from a height - you need to replace it. Even if there is no visible damage. Make sure the foam (protective layer that takes the impact of the crash) is not old, cracked and crumbling. Clean the helmet according to the manufacturer's instructions.
